Fear and Misery in the Third Reich
WATFORD PALACE THEATRE TOURING PROJECT
Writer: Bertolt Brecht
Director: Kirstie Davis
Another show-in-a-box, this time an aluminium cube for Fear + Misery in the Third Reich.
The play was told through the eyes of Auschwitz prisoners. The set contained traces and
elements of the concentration camp, with the gates of Auschwitz forming the back
section of the cube. Stories were told through a pile of old shoes, an actor putting a
pair on became the protagonist. A fascination with boxes was the entire inspiration, the
net of a box forming a floor to the set, folding up into a prison for the actors, within the
obvious confines of the larger box structure.
